Winter Classic: LaBelle to sing anthem
According to a league source, I have learned that Philadelphia native Patti LaBelle will sing the National Anthem prior to the start of the winter Classic Jan. 2.
Lauren Hart, the Flyers usual anthem singer, will still sing God Bless America, but I am told it will be at some point during the game, not before it, a la the seventh inning stretch at a baseball game.
There remains the possibility (probability?) of other acts performing as pre-game entertainment, but those names haven't been leaked just yet.

All I have to say is hey, at least the Phillies won:

I love Patti LaBelle but on the national stage it has to be Lauren Hart/Kate Smith doing God Bless America. It is one of our few traditions but it's a big one. Why shouldn't we show off something unique?

We couldn't find anyone other than the egomaniacal Patti LaBelle to sing the National Anthem? Really? No one else was available? How 'bout: Bianca Ryan (memba her, winner of America's Got Talent a few years back?), Will Smith (?), Taylor Swift (ok, she's from the Reading area), Hall and Oates? How 'bout 'The Hooters' (ex. All you Zombies, And We danced, etc)? C'mon, we can't be that desperate!!!
I think that it is great that he has been given the opportunity to sing. I hope that it is a success.
